How to save money on religious building’s energy bills

Energy is one of the biggest overheads for managing the day-to-day operations of religious centres, but many of them have failed to consider changing energy providers for many years. For this reason, your centre could be overpaying for the energy it’s using, which could be put to better use within your centre and community.

Here at Exchange Utility, we’ve worked with many thousands of religious centres, building owners and similar property owners to help vastly reduce the cost of their gas and electricity bills, with an average saving gained of over a third and all it takes is a quick phone call to our friendly team who will be able to talk you through the process and get the ball rolling.

With so many gas and electricity companies available, it only makes sense to take action today to see who will provide you with the best price for your energy usage. Much like with car insurance, by comparing the energy market, you stand a good chance of making huge savings on your bills.

However, it can be time-consuming and not always easy to understand who to turn to, so for this reason, Exchange Utility works with some of the biggest and best energy providers to secure you the best deals on your gas and electricity. Our in-depth knowledge of the energy market allows us to get you access to a whole range of tariffs and deals, not always available elsewhere.

As well as switching energy suppliers, there are other things you can do to try and cut down on the amount of energy your religious centre or building is using. The key to identifying opportunities to create energy savings lies in awareness. Be aware of when and where the most gas and electricity is being used in your religious building.

You can implement cost-effective energy-saving measures to save your organisation a fantastic amount of money, which you can then reinvest in community projects or the preservation of your building.

With many religious buildings often having high ceilings and/or vast open spaces, it’s not always going to be possible to make energy savings in the conventional ways taken by homeowners, but even the smallest of changes can have a positive impact on the amount of energy you’re using every year.

Tips for reducing energy consumption in religious buildings

1. During the summer, reduce your air conditioning

By lowering your air conditioning by just 1C, you could reduce your energy bills by 8% on average.

2. During the winter, reduce your heating temperature

Similarly, by lowering your heating by 1C, you could save over £100 per year on average.

3. Replace inefficient electric heaters in your building

Replace them with central heating to reduce your heating spend by up to two-thirds on average.

4. Turn the lights out in your building overnight

If your building isn’t in use overnight, by ensuring the lights are turned off overnight you could save £1,000 per year on average.

5. Replace old, inefficient light bulbs

You could also go one further and replace all of your standard bulbs, for more energy-efficient bulks, such as LED bulbs which could save you an additional £3 per bulb per year on average.

6. Make sure you switch off unused electrical equipment overnight

According to the Rainforest Alliance, by simply switching off your plugs and powering down electrical equipment not in use, businesses could cut their annual energy consumption by as much as 40%. Simply turning off computers, printers and other electricals that are not used overnight could save you even more money.

Could your religious centre be owed an energy VAT return?

Many religious centres can be classed as charitable/non-profit organisations. These organisations should only pay a VAT rate of 5% on their energy but could be paying up to the standard rate of 20%.

If it is uncovered that your charity is entitled to VAT relief, we can arrange the recovery of these funds with your supplier – Even if you’ve switched – for up to four years. Get in touch for more details.

Ensure your staff and volunteers are onboard

Religious centres are often supported by volunteers who give up their own time to ensure the place of worship is well maintained. It is vital to ensure these members and volunteers are well aware of the massive impact they can have on the energy saving a place of worship can make – and usually with little to no effort required.

If you’re a religious leader within the church it should be your duty to ensure all staff are on board with the efforts to save on energy bills.

Can you make an instant saving on your energy supplier?

It’s estimated that 1.2m UK businesses are overpaying their energy supplier – Some by 80%. This is due to organisations going out of contract or being on the wrong energy tariff for their business.

Review your organisation’s energy contracts to discover easy savings today. You could save 47% on your building’s energy bill by doing this alone!
